Don’t just manage conflict, master complexity
The purpose of the alumni clinic is to share and discuss ideas to develop a shared understanding and push the boundaries of mediation.
In our next session, Ben Smith and Ian Rigden will facilitate a discussion on how to deal with complex actors in mediation, providing insights from their own experiences in answer to questions from the Alumni.
In addition to raising aspects of mediation you want to explore further on the day, Alumni are encouraged to send any areas of mediation that they wish to discuss in advance. We will aim to cover at least 2-3 topics in each session. This is your chance to delve deeper into the art of mediation.
Dealing with Complex Actors in Mediation
In every mediation, some participants challenge even the most experienced practitioners. They may be unpredictable, resistant, emotionally volatile, or intent on controlling the process. Managing these dynamics requires more than just mediation theory — it demands strategic awareness, emotional intelligence, and staying calm under pressure.
Join us for this engaging and practical webinar on dealing with complex actors in mediation, where, with your peers and facilitated by two experts, you can explore how to:
· Recognise and understand different types of complex behaviour.
· Maintain neutrality and authority when tensions rise.
· Use communication tools that defuse escalation and rebuild trust.
· Set effective boundaries while keeping the process productive.
Whether you work in workplace mediation, community conflict resolution, or commercial dispute management, this session will help you stay effective and composed — even in the toughest conversations.
