The scope of module covers 4 main coaching skills; (1) to maintain presence, (2) to listen actively, (3) to ask powerful questions and (4) to establish direct communication.
- Maintain Presence: The scope is to discuss philosophical assumptions of transactional analysis set out by Eric Berne; (a) People are ok, (b) Everyone has capacity to think, (c) Everyone can decide and change decision. The aim is to gain “autonomy” as a mediator by increasing (a) awareness, (b) spontaneity and (c) capacity for intimacy in a mediation session and of course in life. The competencies in this topic will be linked with (a) cultivating trust and safety in a mediation session, (b) ethical principle in mediation called ‘impartiality’ together with “judger & learner mindsets”, and (b) dynamics in conflict.
- Listen: The scope is to break down listening skill into 3 levels; (a) Internal listening, (b) Focused listening, (c) Global listening. The aim is to increase (a) the competency to listen ‘what is unsaid’ by cultivating curiosity, (b) ability to observe and (c) ability to stay silent. The competencies in this topic will be linked with (a) three philosophical assumptions mentioned above and (b) causes of conflict.
- Ask: The scope is to enlighten asking skill with the techniques asserted by Michael Bungay Stainer. The aim is to (a) increase the competency to ask more “powerful questions” by examining and defining what is “powerful” and (b) discuss the purpose and subject matter of questions which increase understanding among parties by analyzing “values” in our life. The competencies in this topic will be linked with (a) three elements of “autonomy” mentioned above and (b) causes of conflict.
- Direct Communication: The scope is to enlighten communication skills with open, clear, sincere personal relations. The aim is to increase the efficiency of technics such as framing, mirroring, and summarizing. The competencies in this topic will be linked to three philosophical assumptions mentioned above.
Finally, all four skills will be linked with the “transformation of conflict".
Learning Outcomes
- Takeaway 1: Participants are expected to look inside their assumptions, beliefs, values, and explore their perspective on conflict, conflicting parties, and conflicting behavior. Such personal exploration is expected to lead the participants to increase their proficiency to switch between learner and judger mindsets; thus, to apply an honest “impartiality” and set “trust and safety” throughout the mediation process. This takeaway is related with first coaching skill; “maintain presence”.
- Takeaway 2: Participants are expected to increase their awareness on the relation between “values” and “causes of conflict”. Such personal exploration is expected to lead the participants to increase their proficiency to explore the causes of conflict and to ensure such causes to be heard by parties; thus, increase the efficiency in the mediation. This takeaway is related with second and third coaching skill; “listen” and “ask”.
- Takeaway 3: Participants are expected to have a better understanding on how, why, when to use communication technics such as framing, mirroring, summarizing and what to expect from them. Such understanding is expected to lead the participants to increase their proficiency to use the technics more efficiently and timely and for a reason; thus, increase the efficiency in the mediation. This takeaway is related with fourth coaching skill; “direct communication”.
