Mediating the Fragile Peace in Northern Ireland
The peace process in Northern Ireland is over 20 years old -but sectarian conflict is still burning those who live there. This webinar will explain why peace has been so fragile in Northern Ireland and why the mediated settlement reached in 1998 has proved so difficult to implement. Northern Ireland marked its centenary in May 2021, but old questions remain unanswered relating to the political future of the region –and some new ones, such as Brexit, have appeared, that complicate the careful political geometry that shaped Northern Ireland’s peace process a generation ago. This webinar will put Brexit and ongoing political problems in Northern Ireland within a broader historical context, and will explain that we cannot interpret Northern Ireland’s current fragile peace unless we understand where the place and its people have come from.
The Webinar is based on Feargal Cochrane’s recent book, Northern Ireland: The Fragile Peace (Yale University Press, 2021) Northern Ireland by Feargal Cochrane – Yale University Press (yalebooks.co.uk)
